What is PEG MGF?

PEG MGF, or Pegylated Mechano Growth Factor, is a synthetically modified version of the naturally occurring peptide hormone, Mechano Growth Factor (MGF). MGF itself is a variant of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) and plays a crucial role in muscle growth, repair, and regeneration.  

The “PEG” part of PEG MGF refers to the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to the MGF molecule. This process, called pegylation, serves to significantly increase the half-life of MGF. While MGF on its own has a very short half-life (around 5-7 minutes), PEG MGF’s half-life is extended to 48-72 hours, making it much more effective for therapeutic use.  

How does PEG MGF work?

PEG MGF works by primarily stimulating the activation and proliferation of muscle satellite cells (stem cells). These cells are essential for muscle repair and growth as they donate their nuclei to damaged muscle fibers, facilitating their repair and enabling them to grow larger (hypertrophy).  

Beyond its direct action on muscle tissue, PEG MGF also exhibits other beneficial effects, including:

• Neuroprotective effects: Research suggests that PEG MGF may help protect nerve cells from damage and promote their regeneration.

• Cardioprotective effects: It may aid in the repair and regeneration of heart tissue following injury, such as a heart attack.

• Enhanced wound healing: PEG MGF may speed up the healing process of various types of wounds.

• Bone healing: It may also promote bone growth and repair following fractures or other injuries.
